Chapter Twenty-Seven

Don and Kevin rode to the Ebi farm on their borrowed bikes, arriving just as Dan started outlining the plan to the response team.

“Okay, then, it’s all set. Each group understands what they’re gonna do, right?” Dan said.

Rigo and Kyle nodded.

Kelly, Kevin and Bill nodded.

Tweedy, Corey and Don nodded.

Pat, Blake and Conner nodded.

Charlie smiled, too, and before he started walking home, he said to the group, “See y’all later! If ya don’t wanna keep the leftover explosives, bring what’s left back to my house. I don’t have that much left.”

“What’d you say?” Kyle asked.

“Huh?” Charlie said.

“We’ll just bring you back whatever’s left,” Dan shouted.

Dan, Rigo and Kyle moved out, travelling light, following the footsteps made by the feral men, or simply “the ferals,” as they were now called. The footprints of the thirty ferals were easy for them to follow.

In addition to their handguns, with spare magazines for each, they carried eight thirty-round magazines for their AR-15s. Kyle and Rigo each carried a solid self-defense knife and Dan, as usual, carried four knives stashed here and there, in and on his clothing. Rigo wore a daypack filled with the explosives so Kyle could quickly access the C-4, the dynamite and the assorted items needed to make them explode.

Each of them, except Rigo, who was overloaded with explosives, weapons and related paraphernalia, also carried two old and yellowed one-liter water bottles, each topped off. These precious plastic bottles were never crunched or tossed. People kept them in the shade, too, so they’d last longer. Plus, most carried a replenished pocketful of deer jerky and a string-tied deerskin pouch filled with dried nuts and berries, each of which Alison Lee estimated contained over two thousand calories.

The others followed behind in groups of three. Bill’s group was to follow a parallel line a few hundred yards north of Dan’s group. Tweedy’s group would follow the footprints, but a quarter mile behind Dan’s group, a two-minute run, at most. Pat’s group would also follow a straight line, but a few hundred yards to the south. The idea was for the groups to form a quarter-mile-wide triangle, sweeping east through the forest following the footprints. The groups to the north and south would keep in constant sight of Dan’s group, moving closer together if the woods thickened. At least that was the plan, until the south group got disoriented after stumbling into an impenetrable field of thick blackberry bushes and, later, slowed by a steep cliff.

The primary assignment for the other groups was simple: move in fast and hard in case the ferals slipped past the leading group or be prepared to kill them all in the unfortunate event that the first group of three entered Valhalla after earning the sacred silver medal.

The trailing three groups expected hundreds of gunshots and a series of explosions. Then silence for a time followed by an occasional gunshot as the few fleeing survivors were hunted down one by one. The signal they had agreed upon to let the others know they had found their prey was simple: lots of gunfire and explosions.
